2021-8-2  The effect of high O 2 concentration on photosynthetic 14 CO 12 assimilation and its 14 C-products in leaves of low temperature pretreated (cold-acclimated) rape plants was studied. The inhibition of photosynthesis (Warburg effect) and modification in photosynthetic carbon metabolism caused by O 2 were found to be less pronounced in the low temperature pretreated than in the control plants.

The inhibition increases with oxygen concentration and is about 30% in an atmosphere of 21% O 2 and 0.03% Co. 2. Undoubtedly, therefore, oxygen in normal air exerts a strong inhibitory effect on photosynthetic Co 2 fixation of land plants under natural conditions. The inhibitory effect of oxygen is rapidly produced and fully reversible.

Abstract. The effect of oxygen on photosynthesis depends on plant species and on some internal and environmental conditions. Oxygen inhibits the photosynthesis of C 3 plants at atmospheric CO 2 concentration (Warburg effect).
